A new dentist opens a practice, or an owner is told the software is “end of life”, and the same question arrives: what do we actually need, and what is just a vendor adding a tab? Dental software is not one product. It is six or seven categories that overlap at the edges, sold by companies that each want to be the whole stack.
Quick answer. Dental software falls into seven categories: practice management (the core), imaging, patient communications, billing and revenue cycle, analytics, clinical charting and AI diagnostics. Buy the practice management system first, because everything else has to connect to it. Imaging comes second, claims third, then communications, analytics and AI as specific problems appear.
What are the categories of dental software?
| Category | What it does | Well-known makers (verified 13 Oct 2026) | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practice management | Schedule, patient records, ledger, insurance, statements | Open Dental, Dentrix (Henry Schein One), Eaglesoft and Fuse (Patterson), Curve Dental, Denticon (Planet DDS) | The core. Everything else connects here |
| Imaging | Capture and store X-rays, photos, 3D scans | DEXIS (Envista), Carestream Dental, Planmeca Romexis, Apteryx (Planet DDS) | Bridges into the patient record |
| Patient communications | Reminders, texting, recall, forms, reviews | Weave, Solutionreach, RevenueWell, Adit | Reads appointments, writes messages and sometimes bookings |
| Billing and revenue cycle | Claims, eligibility, remittance, attachments | VYNE Dental, DentalXChange | Takes claims out, brings payments back |
| Analytics | Turns the ledger and schedule into numbers and lists | Dental Intelligence, Practice by Numbers, Jarvis Analytics, Calibic | Reads from the core, usually writes nothing |
| Clinical charting | Tooth chart, perio chart, notes, treatment plans | Built into each practice management system; voice perio add-ons | Inside the core |
| AI diagnostics | Marks suspected disease on radiographs | Overjet, Pearl, Dexis (DEXassist) | Sits on top of imaging |
The rest of this page says what each category is, what its makers say about themselves, and how they connect.
Practice management: the one you cannot skip
This is the program the front desk lives in all day. Scheduling, patient records, the ledger, insurance and statements. Every other category reads its data or writes into it.
- Dentrix. Henry Schein One’s product. Its site describes it as an “all-in-one dental practice management platform” and says “35,000+” practices rely on it (vendor claim). Henry Schein One also sells Dentrix Ascend, a cloud version.
- Eaglesoft. Patterson Dental’s. Patterson’s FAQ states Eaglesoft is server-based, not cloud, and says nearly 30,000 users rely on it (vendor claim). Patterson’s cloud product is Fuse.
- Open Dental. Publishes its fee: $199 per location per month for the first 12 months, then $149, covering up to 3 providers, with each extra provider $20 per month (fee page, checked 13 Oct 2026).
- Curve Dental. Describes itself as an “AI-powered, cloud-based dental practice management platform” that runs in a browser. It publishes no price and asks you to request a quote.
- Denticon. Planet DDS’s cloud system. Planet DDS aims it mainly at DSOs and multi-location groups and cites “13,000+” practices (vendor claim).
The choice between server-based and cloud is its own decision. See how to choose practice management software and cloud versus on-premise.
Imaging: how the picture gets into the chart
Imaging software captures the X-ray from the sensor and stores it with the patient. The question that matters is whether it bridges to your practice management system, so the image opens from the chart.
- DEXIS lists its Imaging Suite and DTX Studio Clinic, plus sensors, intraoral scanners and handheld X-ray units on its site.
- Carestream Dental lists CS Imaging 8 as the core software for its imaging systems and CS 3D Imaging for 3D work.
- Planmeca describes Romexis as an all-in-one platform covering 2D and 3D imaging and CAD/CAM.
- Apteryx XrayVision sits in the Planet DDS lineup. Planet DDS closed its acquisition of Apteryx in August 2020, per the company’s closing announcement.
Patterson says Eaglesoft integrates with Sidexis, DEXIS, Planmeca and others. Ask any vendor for the written list of practice management systems it bridges to, and which version.
Patient communications: reminders, texting, recall
This category reaches patients. Appointment reminders, two-way texting, recall outreach, digital forms, online scheduling and review requests.
- Weave calls itself an all-in-one communication platform for small business, with healthcare as its main market, and its pricing page says plans start from $199 per month (checked 13 Oct 2026).
- Solutionreach describes itself as patient engagement software for dental, eye care and medical practices, and says it serves 50,000+ practices (vendor claim).
- RevenueWell says it is built exclusively for dentists, and adds in-house digital marketing. It claims 11,200+ practices (vendor claim).
- Adit lists phones, texting, forms, analytics, claims and AI front desk in one platform, and publishes no subscription price (checked 13 Oct 2026).
The categories blur here. Weave, Adit and others add analytics tabs. Dental Intelligence and Practice by Numbers add reminders and phones. Read the full feature lists, not the category name.
Billing and revenue cycle: claims out, money in
Your practice management system can send claims. The billing category covers the layer around that: electronic attachments, eligibility checks, remittance (ERA) and patient payments.
- VYNE Dental offers claims, attachments, eligibility, ERA and its Trellis platform, and says it is trusted by over 84,000 offices (vendor claim).
- DentalXChange lists claims, attachments, eligibility, credentialing, ERA, patient statements and dental billing services, and cites nearly 1,400 payer connections (vendor claim).
Some practices also use outsourced billing companies. That is a service, not software, and it needs read and write access to your ledger, so ask exactly what they can change.
Analytics: what the practice management system does not tell you
Practice management systems print reports. Analytics tools read the same data and turn it into trends, lists and a daily view. Most are cloud services that sync from your system overnight.
- Dental Intelligence calls itself a practice performance platform covering analytics, scheduling, patient engagement, payments and insurance (checked 13 Oct 2026). It says it supports Open Dental, Eaglesoft, Dentrix, Dentrix Ascend and Denticon. No price is shown on the page.
- Practice by Numbers lists 25 supported systems and says “from just $249/month” (checked 13 Oct 2026).
- Jarvis Analytics is a Henry Schein One analytics dashboard with a library of “50+ specific KPIs.” It first served DSOs and opened to private practices in 2022.
- Calibic is a read-only analytics layer for Open Dental, Dentrix and Eaglesoft, $149 per location per month, or $119 billed annually. It is not a communications product. Texting and campaigns are on the roadmap, not live.
The numbers themselves are covered in dental practice dashboards.
Clinical charting: inside the core
You do not buy charting separately. The tooth chart, perio chart, clinical notes and treatment plans live inside the practice management system. What you can add are specialist tools, mostly around voice-driven perio charting and note-taking.
Curve lists charting, perio charting and an ambient AI feature in its own product. Denticon lists native imaging and voice perio charting. Henry Schein One sells Dentrix Voice, formerly Dentrix Voice Perio, for dictating perio exams and clinical notes. If you want to dictate perio numbers hands free, check whether your system has it before buying a separate tool.
AI diagnostics: a second pair of eyes on the X-ray
These tools analyze radiographs and mark suspected disease for the dentist to confirm.
- Overjet says its Vision AI is “FDA-cleared” for detecting and outlining disease and anatomy on X-rays.
- Pearl says its Second Opinion is “FDA cleared to support 2D and 3D diagnostic workflows” and names Dentrix Ascend, Eaglesoft, Open Dental and Denticon among its integrations, with a note to confirm with sales.
- DEXIS introduced DEXassist inside DEXIS 10, which flags findings on 2D intraoral X-rays (trade press report).
FDA clearance is for specific indications. The vendors’ pages do not list them, so ask for the 510(k) summary of the exact finding you care about. Cleared does not mean it replaces the dentist’s reading.
How do the categories connect?
- Imaging feeds the chart. The sensor software hands the image to the practice management system through a bridge.
- AI sits on the image. It reads the radiograph and shows findings the dentist accepts or ignores.
- The core owns the ledger. Treatment, fees, payments and claims all post here.
- Billing tools carry claims out and payments back. The result lands in the ledger.
- Communications read the schedule. They send reminders and may write confirmations back.
- Analytics read the ledger and schedule. The better ones never write.
The practical test for any add-on: does it read, write, or both? A tool that writes can fix things and can also break them. Ask for the list of fields it changes.
Which one should a small practice buy first?
- No practice management system yet, or yours is being retired. Start here, before anything else. Decide cloud or server, then get written pricing for your provider count.
- System chosen, no sensors. Imaging next. Confirm the bridge to your system by name and version.
- Claims are slow or rejected. Billing tools. Ask what your system already does for attachments and eligibility before paying for more.
- Chairs sit empty from no-shows and overdue recall. Communications. Compare reminder and recall features, and count how many logins you will end up with.
- You cannot answer “how was the week?” in a minute. Analytics. Start with a free spreadsheet and move to software when pulling the numbers becomes a job.
- Dentists want a second opinion on radiographs. AI diagnostics last. It needs good imaging underneath and is the easiest purchase to delay.
What does Calibic add?
Calibic sits only in the analytics category. It reads Open Dental, Dentrix and Eaglesoft over read-only connections, and never writes, edits or deletes a record. It does not support cloud-only systems such as Dentrix Ascend today. It is built for HIPAA, and a Business Associate Agreement is sent with every sign up. If you already have a communications vendor, the two do not conflict.
Next step: write down which of the seven categories you already pay for, then see where the Product overview fits. For a fair side-by-side with others in the analytics category, read Calibic vs Dental Intelligence.
As of 13 October 2026. Vendor figures are self-reported unless noted. Calibic is not affiliated with any vendor named here.
